What is Reglan?

Reglan is the brand name for the prescription drug metoclopramide, prescribed to more than 2 million Americans to treat gastrointestinal problems in children and adults. Reglan is most often used to control gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), or to reduce nausea and vomiting. Physicians will often use Reglan for both children and adults suffering from reflux, diabetic gastroparesis, and other conditions related to the stomach such as heartburn, decreased appetite, and prolonged fullness after eating.

Reglan is available in tablets, syrups and injections. Names include Reglan Tablets, Reglan Oral Disintegrating Tablets, Metoclopramide Oral Solution, and Reglan Injection.

How does Reglan work?

Reglan (metoclopramide) works by affecting the lower esophageal sphincter pressure, which then helps to improve gastrointestinal emptying. Speeding up the movement of the stomach muscles, Reglan increases the rate at which the stomach empties into the intestines.

The FDA has only approved Reglan for short-term treatment (between 4 and 12 weeks) of these conditions, and only after conservative methods of treatment has failed. Unfortunately, prescription trends prove that many patients are prescribed Reglan for longer than 12 weeks (often for years), which is against FDA recommendations. The FDA ordered a blackbox warning for Reglanthat requires reglan manufacturers to provide a detailed medication information guide for users. We believe the manufacturers of Reglan are well aware of these extended prescription trends.

Tardive dyskinesia Symptoms

Tardive dyskinesia is a syndrome of jerky, involuntary movements that often affects the tongue, face, mouth or jaw. Dyskinesia refers to the jerky, involuntary movements themselves, while tardive means the jerky movements can continue even after people stop using the medication. Reglan use is the most common cause of drug-induced movement disorders or Parkinson like symptoms, according to the FDA.
